Norwich Medics v Lowestoft & Yarmouth III
L & Y traveled to play Norwich Medics at the ground they share with Lakenham Hewitt. Speaking to Medics skipper on arrival Lowestoft found Medics only had 13 players and no front row so the game was played with unopposed scrums and L & Y Manager, David Rose, guesting for the home side allowing all L & Y players to play.
The warm up took place on the second team pitch, this however proved to be dangerous even with unopposed scrums so Lakenham Hewitt's first team, who were holding a training session on their first team pitch, kindly allowed the game to take place on the more suitable surface.
As has become the "norm" with games involving these two sides, it soon turned into a free flowing, all action game. The first points came after 20 minutes when the Norwich Medics winger went over only to find he'd touched down on the five yard line. This resulted in L & Y clearing from the scrum but the kick being returned and Norwich Medics scoring in the opposite corner.
The first half saw the Medics score two further tries neither of which were converted. The highlight of the half however was L & Y Manager, David Rose, collecting a kick off and rolling back the years with a lovely break into the L & Y 22.
Half time score was 15 - 0
The second half saw a fired up L & Y side mimicking the "All Blacks" with a superb passage of passing and supporting rugby which was finished off with a lovely solo run from Jed Tearle which he also converted.
From the kick off the referee missed an obvious knock on from the Medics number 10 which caused L & Y to stop, expecting a scrum to be given but Medics, quite rightly, continued to play and ran through a disorganised L & Y defence to score.
The game continued with open flowing rugby which was a credit to both sides considering the swamp like conditions. Youngsters Kieran Baldry and Joe Lubbock gave a hint of things to come at 9 and 10 and linked well with debut player Darren Foiret and skipper Chris Mason in the centres. Also Antony Norman and his son Charlie both showed incredible commitment in both attack and defence throughout the whole game.
We would also like to thank Gareth Bowker, who after finding out his game for the second team was cancelled showed commitment to the club by travelling over and playing for L & Y III's and also to temporarily retired, Lee Protheroe (Pasta), who helped with the warm up and took the first steps in his coaching career.
The final score was 40 - 12 to Medics but considering the playing conditions the old cliche of the game being the winner has never been more true.
Man of the Match Darren Foiret, a great debut with much promise of things to come.
